Footprints in the Valley - Homa & Migdal
Tel-Amal - reconstructed site at Gan Hashlosha Park

Exhibitions

Main

Homa & Migdal is a fortified settlement, which duplicates the Tel-Amal camp (Nir-David), the  first  "Stockade  and  tower" settlement.  These settlements were raised quickly, within a day or a night to oppose Arab rioters and the British government during the Riots of 1936-1939.

The upper  part  is the  replica. The  buildings  were  reconstructed  according  to  the  original  ones, but  most  of  the  articles  are  authentic, donated  by  the  settlers  themselves . They preserve our heritage.

The Tour

Every person in  the  settlement  had  a  job. You are  invited  to  pass  through  the  stations  of  their everyday  life  and feel  the  way  of  life  in  that  time  period. Since  all  the  jobs  were  different, every  person  had  their  own  tasks, so  where  you  start  does  not  matter .

Defense:

  1. Guard  Tower  (Climb it! ).
The  tower  was  used  as  a  lookout  and  communication post.  To send  a  message  to  the  settlers, the  guard  would  speak  through  the  pipe  that  goes  down  the  side  of  the  tower .
In  the field on the right near  a  small hill lived a band of  about 400 Bedouins.  Far off to the left there  is  a  concrete  tower  on  a  large  hill, which  was  built  for  the  defense  of  the  guards  in  the  fields.
  1. The  Stockade
The  stockade was a double  wall, about 1.6 meters high, filled  with  gravel to  prevent  bullets  from  penetrating. On one side  of  the  stockade  there  is  a  large  guard stand , which  was  also  used  as  a  barn.  On the other side  there  is  another  stand .

Dining Room :

Between thirty and forty  people  used  this  room  for  meals  and  had communal discussions here (of course  back  then  there  were  no  air  conditioners) . All  the  utensils were made  of  tin, and  on  every  table  there  was  just  one  knife for  which  you  needed  a lot  of  patience and cooperation.

Kitchen :

There  was  no  tap  water  in  the  kitchen.  Water  was  brought  from  a  spring. Fresh  food  was  brought  from  Kibbutz Beit-Alpha . Good  food  can be  cooked  with  the small gas stove (primus).

Laundry Room  /  Showers  :

For  bathing  the  settlers  mostly  used  the  river, where the water  is  81 F (28 C) degrees  year-round .  For   laundry , they  took  water  from  the  river  and  boiled  it  with  the small gas stove (primus).

Living Quarters:

It was very  hot  in  the  summer  and  cold  in  the  winter.  Full  cooperation was necessary as people worked  by  day  and  guarded the settlement  at  night. The  items  on  the  bed  were  used  as  protection  against  mosquitoes  and  the  sticks  were  used  for  self-defense .

In the yard there are settlers' clothes and tools:
You may wear the clothes, feel the tools and travel 80 years back in time.
