Aaronsohn House - NILI Museum

Exhibitions

Main

The museum contains the story of the first Jewish underground called NILI (Netzah Israel Lo Yeshaker" – "He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind", I Samuel 15:29), which operated in the country during World War I. Eretz Israel at that time was part of the Ottoman Empire which ruled the land cruelly, despotically, compromising the very existence of Jewish settlement in the country.

From 1915 onwards, NILI forwarded to the British a considerable volume of information and intelligence material regarding the Turkish army, its movements, roads and the availability of water springs. Due to the assistance of NILI spy ring, the British succeeded in conquering Palestine from the Ottoman Empire, and this accelerated the end of the war in the entire region.

NILI's goals were:
  • To assist the British army in winning the war against the Turks by collecting intelligence material.
  • To support the Jewish community in Eretz Israel who suffered from famine and disease.
  • To draw the attention of the outside world to the situation in the country.
  • To further the Zionist dream of a national home land.
