Description
The painting depicts a road winding between trees. On the left, there is a group of cypresses, their branches whirling around the trunks. On the right, there is a group of trees, probably poplars, whose lower branches are pruned. None of the trees is individually denoted or characterized. Those on the right bend toward one another, their light crowns forming a kind of a canopy. The white-blue enamel sky sheds light on the trees, and the brightened patches of the tree trunks are united with the sky in a homogenous white-and-blue paste. The branches, the tree trunks, and the road are all curved. The space within is closed, and the eye is led into the domed space by flashes and flecks of light; in this animated environment, however, it suggests a feminine figure. This figure and the one with an animal-like head and a staff, under the trees on the left, add a sense of mystery to this animated landscape.
