Description
According to Denis Rouart and Daniel Wildenstein, Head of an Old Woman was one of the last works that Manet executed in the Atelier Couture. The white bonnet sets off the figures old but noble and determined face against the gray background. The figure is marked by deep wrinkles, a large nose, somewhat flabby skin, and large protruding chin. The choice of model and the sharp contrasts are in the tradition of 17th century Dutch masters. After 1856, Manet's manner developed in the direction of greater freedom in the use of color.
