Main

Founded in Jerusalem in 1981, the Umberto Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art was set up to collect, preserve and display objects pertaining to Jewish life in Italy from the Renaissance period through to the present time. This is the only museum that collects original artistic objects and documentation from all the Jewish communities throughout Italy. 
 
The outstanding highlight of the museum is the synagogue dated 1701, with its magnificent Ark decorated with fine golden carved wooden ornamentation; it was originally the synagogue of Conegliano Veneto, a village located nearby Venice.

​​The Museum and Synagogue are housed in the former Schmidt Compound building in the heart of Jerusalem, built between the years 1886-1887.
Situated on the ground floor is a vaulted hall decorated with painted illustrations accompanied by biblical verses in several languages, and embellished with flora and fauna motifs in the typical style of late 19th century Orientalism.

 

​The permanent exhibit

​The permanent exhibit, "Made in Italy: the Material Side of Spiritual Objects" is arranged according to materials and techniques: ornate metalwork in the first room, textiles in the second, carved wooden furniture in the third, and hand-decorated parchments and rare books in the fourth. Temporary exhibits are also held at the museum.

In addition, the museum offers activities for children and adults, and holds a variety of cultural events, such as concerts, workshops and many more in the Fresco Hall.
